There's a crack in everything - Part 2

Sam Hunt referred to the joys of living on that edgy margin between land and water that we love so well. Ever since i saw the sun shining through clouds over a stormy Tasman sea north of Rapahoe and believing that was God in heaven shining his light, I have been fascinated with those shafts of light.

My recent re acquaintance with Leonard Cohen linked back to those early experiences where sun strikes sea - There is a crack in everything, ... that's where the light gets in

The Sun is shining right up my Back Passage

So said Aunt Daisy once upon a time to much mirth about the double entendre, intended or not?

But i always celebrate when the morning sun shines in through the south window, spring has well and truly sprung!

The language of Tradesmen

Well I am learning the meaning of "soon" and "sometime next week" when it comes to tradesmen. Frustratingly so in the case of my heat pump, which had some wires chewed by a mouse, then fried to a crisp by the service guy who forgot to turn the power off, who then returned with a series of misdiagnosed fixes and no timeframe provided for the next visit. Long story short, he took 6 visits and 8 weeks to fix the thing... in the middle of winter. If he had bothered opening the cover on the first visit and turning off the power it would have been fixed in minutes.

Better news with the new bedroom - Trevor started on it this week. It will take a couple of weeks for the windows to be built, but I can wait that long. I continue my quest for a shed to put the bike and tools in.

The Westering Skies

The norwesters are here, with their energy and light, inspiring in the morning, muscular in the evening.

From same day recently. Sunrise from the back door, looking past the clothesline to the path to the beach, Zac never obeys the speed limit.

Afternoon looking out at the city from the top of the sand hill.

"Anthem"

The birds they sang
at the break of day
Start again
I heard them say
Don't dwell on what
has passed away
or what is yet to be.
Ah the wars they will
be fought again
The holy dove
She will be caught again
bought and sold
and bought again
the dove is never free.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

We asked for signs
the signs were sent:
the birth betrayed
the marriage spent
Yeah the widowhood
of every government --
signs for all to see.

I can't run no more
with that lawless crowd
while the killers in high places
say their prayers out loud.
But they've summoned, they've summoned up
a thundercloud
and they're going to hear from me.

Ring the bells that still can ring ...

You can add up the parts
but you won't have the sum
You can strike up the march,
there is no drum
Every heart, every heart
to love will come
but like a refugee.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.
That's how the light gets in.
That's how the light gets in.

Midwinter Sun

Yesterday was the first fine day since about 23 June. The midwinter sun almost felt too hot, its brightness surreal after the days of grey. I celebrated this luminous day with a midwinter surf, nice wee swell, dolphins on the beach further down by the pier and the snow laden Southern Alps looming huge over the city as i walked back over those ever present Sandhills.

More Poetry from Aidan

I love hearing about Aidan's creative methodology. Apparently during his latest creation, he had Zac in there, but he didn't get out and another creature emerged instead.

His latest poem was read out at school assembly again. Guess what the creature being pursued is. Big Cousin Jordan might know, because it featured on his birthday card this past weekend.

Tree Glider

In the forest all is still.
Silence, complete silence.
Then all of a sudden
a rustling sound fills the air.

A shadow is seen,
darting this way and that.
In pursuit is a forest cat.
The shadow takes shape.

Up a tree gliding from branch to branch
in the night unseen.

The forest cat gives up
It's tired and weary.
He'll come back tomorrow
awake and refreshed.

Wow, the sun shines so much during week days

This pic about sums up most days, coffee from Switch, beachcombing with the dog... and cleaning up afterward

All good

That was the River...

...this is the Sea...

Time to start another new chapter in my life... It feels right. Haven't a clue what is out there and it is a wonderful feeling.

Sundays with Aidan

It's just the men. Sunday is the day that Aidie and I get together.
We fix the bike and play soccer with Zac, eat spaghetti bolognese and watch Top Gear together on TV. On Monday mornings, rain or shine I give Aidie a ride to school on the bonnie, sweet!

Kayla wrote this...

SOUTHSHORE

In the morning, bare feet freeze as they run in tiptoes over the wet, frozen grass and hard as ice sand hills to watch the sun rise. The waves roar as the golden orb of warmth slowly hoists itself out of the distant horizon. The rays spread across the land, illuminating the dew covered grasses and tree-laden hills looming to the south. The salty scent of the ocean drifts through the crisp morning air. Bird song, sweet as sugar, pierces the still morning as beach towels are spread out on the coarse, softening sand, an explosion of bright colours. Teenagers tearing up the giant waves out the back on surfboards featuring swirly neon patterns while mothers and their infants splash in the shallows. Miniature wavelets reaching out for the sandy jandals of the adults leisurely strolling down the length of the beach.

Couch Potatoes on winter days, camped out by the telly to have a DVD marathon. A warm, full aroma wafts throughout the house. Chicken soup - Yum! Chatting to friends on msn and bebo and playing online games. The storm has fits of rage outside; beautiful sunshine one minute, rain bucketing down and lightning crackling the next. Bundled up in our warm winter pjs, snuggling into our thick, soft duvets; we don't feel the cold, harsh wind that is blustering outside.

Dancing in the warm twilight breeze, bombshell roses creep up the fences that border the pavement. Their sweet fragrances grabbing all of your senses and refusing to let go until you seize the light green stems and inhale the floral scent of the brightly coloured petals. The sunset lights up the sky, luminous pink and golden flying saucers floating up, up, up, until the darkness settles in, engulfing them in its shadows. Stargaze. Lying in the long grass, staring up at the creamy full moon. The Southern Cross bears down on us as clouds roll across the beautiful night sky, bringing chills up your spine.

Special occasions and celebration. Having our Christmas party. Sitting at the table outside to catch up with our relatives and just chat about anything and everything. Playing pool and watching the telly until our dinner is ready. Our Christmas meal. Turkey, chicken, gravy, roast veges, mashed potatoes; all sorts of food. Desert is the best part! Making the trifle with dad, letting me lick the custard carton. Ice-cream, jelly, trifle and cream. Easter time! Searching for Easter eggs in the garden and the long grass. Having banana cake with cream in the middle of it.

My dreamspace is the best place in the world to me.

Welcome the madhouse Zac

Zac has joined our family. He is a 14 week old Jack Russell with bitsa Pomeranian and Papillon. An absolute little smoocher and a live wire to boot, loves the kids, loves the beach. Will put up some better photos of him soon.

Easter trip to Hamilton

Kayla and I journeyed to Hamilton at Easter for the national Inter Provincial Competitions. I was a manager for the team. It was a great trip, the other managers and the kids were all fantastic and we came third overall. Kayla won her section of the high jump and is now ranked around 4th in NZ for her age group.

I think we have both made some life long friends on this trip.

Well Done Chicky

Kayla has continued a great year in athletics by winning the Canterbury Secondary Schools U14 high jump title. She recently won the Canterbury U13 title and also set a new U14 record for the high jump at Avonside Girls' High. She now goes forward to represent her school at the SI Secondary championship in Invercargill and we then go to Hamilton where she will represent Canterbury at the national Inter Provincial championships. I am a very proud dad and coach. All three of my senior athletes won Canterbury Secondary school titles this weekend, they have worked so hard this year.
